What I don't understand about the Hayden nomination is why the White House apparently made no effort to solidify Republican support on the Hill before rushing forward with the announcement of Goss' ouster and Hayden's selection to replace him.  That Peter Hoekstra goes on Fox News and seriously challenges the choice and Pat Roberts makes clear yet that he hasn't made up his mind but has serious reservations signals either that the Bush administration simply no longer cares about Congressional relations or that they want a fierce debate on national security and terrorism in the run-up to the midterm elections, which it seems will neatly coincide or be proximate to Hayden's confirmation hearings.
